THIS MUSIC LEAVES STAINS

Danzig’s true zeitgeist moment: after the Thrall: Demonsweatlive EP sparked a radio fire in the Spring of 1993 via its raucous concert version of “Mother,” Def American quickly assembled a corresponding video in hopes of cracking MTV rotation. The gambit worked; you could not turn on the music channel that July without seeing a sweat-laden Danzig swaggering past his flotilla of security (were they there to keep the crowd away from him or vice versa?). Ironically, the audio used in the “Mother ‘93” video was not the live track, but “Mother’s” original 1988 studio version remixed to include crowd noise.
